STAMFORD, Conn. Being a member of Congress, Jim Himes is not used to seeing unanimous agreement. You can imagine his surprise when the dozen children he read to at the Stamford Community Health Center all voted in favor of the books he brought with him.
Himes read: How do Dinosaurs Clean their Rooms? Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed, and Book! Book! Book! He also asked children about the dinosaurs and made animal noises with them.
Himes' visit to the health center was part of Reach Out and Reads Summer of a Million Books program, which is meant to encourage children 6 months to 5-years-old to read or be read to. Child in the program should get a new book by Sept. 8, which is International Literacy Day, a press release said.
Preparing kids so they enter school ready to learn is is one of the most important things we can do to help them succeed, Himes said in a release. Im so proud to join Reach Out and Reads efforts to get books in kids hands to help them start learning as early as possible.
