Himes Nominated for Second Term

Rep. Jim Himes accepted his party’s nomination for a second term to the U.S. Congress. Democrats from across Connecticut’s fourth Congressional district gathered at Bridgeport’s Central High School last night for the nominating convention. Delegates and supporters rose to their feet and cheered as their candidate listed the accomplishments of the 111th Congress, work that he pledged to continue if returned to office.

“When I took office, I started getting letters from constituents losing their jobs,” said Himes, who was first elected in 2009. “But we passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that helped save or create two million jobs. We cut taxes for five out of six Fairfield County workers. But I won’t stop until every worker knows the dignity, respect and paycheck of a steady job.”

State Rep. Bruce Morris took a turn at the microphone and said the Congressman had done his work. Now it was time, Morris said, for those attending the convention to do theirs. “How many folks in this room are committed to knocking on doors and raising funds?” he asked. The question provoked a hearty response.

Norwalk delegate Greg Burnett, who sat with former Norwalk mayor Alex Knopp, said he intended to talk with everyone he knew and share his conviction that Jim Himes is the best candidate for the job. “In the short time that he has been in office, his track record speaks for itself,” said Burnett. “He has been very supportive of creating jobs, education and health care. These are the foundations that keep communities alive.”
