Himes calls Giffords 'Skilled' and 'Caring'

Local Congressman Jim Himes will hold a brown bag lunch in Westport Monday despite the shooting of Democratic colleague Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona Saturday.

Himes said in a statement he was “shocked and saddened” by the Saturday shooting spree in which Giffords was critically wounded and six people were killed outside a Tucson supermarket.

“My thoughts and prayers are with my friend and colleague Gabby Giffords, her family and staff, and all those hurt or killed in the shooting today in Arizona. Gabby is a dedicated public servant, skilled legislator, and caring individual. I admire her commitment to furthering public discourse and to gathering input from her constituents. I am shocked and saddened by today's events and wish Gabby and all the others injured a quick recovery.”

Himes will hold a brown bag lunch with First Selectman Gordon Joseloff at Westport Town Hall at noon Monday. Himes said the public is invited to discuss any and all issues.

Giffords is in critical condition in intensive care, Reuters reported Sunday night. Jared Lee Loughner, 22, is the sole person in custody in connection to the shooting, news outlets reported Sunday night.
