FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- You're going to feel really hot today, the National Weather Service says.
While the forecast for Tuesday calls for highs in the mid-90s, the heat index, which takes humidity into account, will make it feel as hot as 105. The Weather Service has issued a heat advisory, urging residents to take extra precautions to stay cool from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The Weather Service recommends:
Drinking plenty of water
Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing
Rescheduling strenuous activity until evening hours
Those working outside should take frequent breaks in the shade or inside where there is air conditioning.
Everyone also should watch for the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. The Centers for Disease Control and Protection says infants and young children, seniors and people who are overweight or have medical conditions are more at-risk for dangerous heat-related illnesses.
Here are the CDC's signs of heat stroke, a potentially life-threatening condition:
An extremely high body temperature (above 103°F, orally)
Red, hot and dry skin (no sweating)
Rapid, strong pulse
Throbbing headache
Dizziness
Nausea
Confusion
Unconsciousness
People showing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.
Relief from the heat could come in the form of a 20 percent of rain showers later Tuesday, a low of 69 Tuesday night and temperatures in the mid-80s during the rest of the week, the Weather Service says.
