Gunfire Prompts School Lockdown

Shots fired in the Chestnut Street area prompted a lockdown at Columbus Elementary School on Friday. School principal Emily Lopez said she received a call from the Norwalk Police Department telling her to bring all students indoors while the police investigated.

Within minutes, she said, the fourth and fifth graders were brought in from the playground. Doors were locked so no one could enter or leave the school. School officials’ next concern, Lopez said, was to reassure the children. “We told them, ‘You are safe. We are all safe,’” she said.

NPD investigators learned three or four shots had been fired at a tan car as it passed the King Kennedy Housing Project at around 12:20 on Friday afternoon. Sgt. Bruce Hume, spokesperson for the NPD, said police officers have recovered shell casings from the area. Though they have identified a 15-year-old male who was riding in the car, they are not releasing his name because of his age.

The children at Columbus did not see anything from the playground, Lopez said, though some reported hearing “loud bangs.” After checking with police, Columbus followed its regular dismissal routine. Lopez sent letters home to parents explaining the incident and social workers are on hand to talk with any students troubled by the events.
