The Walk Bridge is 118 years old and is a vital cog along the New Haven Line, servicing more than 140 Metro-North and Amtrak trains daily, ctmirror.org reported.
The bridge has become stuck open twice in recent weeks, causing delays lasting for hours for commuters in Fairfield County and beyond.
The Walk Bridge is listed on the National Register of Historic Places but has long been considered to be in poor condition, ctmirror.org said.
Efforts to repair the bridge have fallen short because the of the hefty price tag that the state would be forced to absorb, according to ctmirror.org.
