Falling Tree Kills Motorist on Merritt

STAMFORD, Conn. — A man driving a car with Massachusetts plates was killed Thursday afternoon on the Merritt Parkway when a tree fell on his car, the Stamford Advocate reported. Two passengers were removed from the car and taken to the hospital, the Advocate quoted Matt Maounis, assistant chief of the Turn of River Company, as saying. The driver and passengers were not identified.

The accident came during a heavy rainstorm that caused many highway problems throughout Fairfield County. The southbound Merritt in Stamford was closed for several hours after the fatal crash, which occurred shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to the newspaper. The accident happened between Exits 34 and 35, according to The Hartford Courant.
