The icy travel conditions were also expected to last overnight into early Christmas morning in areas that saw snow squalls, the weather service said.
Temperatures were predicted to drop into the teens and low 20 overnight, resulting in areas of black ice across Fairfield County and southwestern Connecticut.
The biggest problems will be on untreated surfaces, overpasses and bridges. Those traveling early Christmas morning were urged to slow down and exercise extra caution.
Snow squalls occurred throughout late Tuesday evening, some heavy at times, the weather service said.
The snow reduced visibility and coated the ground, including roadways and parking lots.
Temperatures were initially above freezing, especially near the coast, allowing the snow to melt on some surfaces. But temperatures were expected to fall rapidly in the evening, causing any wet snow and slush to quickly refreeze.
Anyone traveling Tuesday evening is urged to use extra caution.
Overnight lows will hit the teens. Christmas will be sunny and cold, with high temperatures near 25 degrees.
