The Installation Mass was celebrated at St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Trumbull, the largest church in the diocese.

Caggiano, 54, succeeded William Lori, who in March 2012 became the archbishop of Baltimore. Lori attended Thursday along with New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Cardinal Edward Egan, a former bishop of Bridgeport and archbishop of New York.

In his homily, Caggiano linked his past in his birthplace in Brooklyn, N.Y., to his present in Bridgeport.

Caggiano, a former auxiliary bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, was appointed Bishop of Bridgeport by Pope Francis in July. He was born in the Gravesend section of Brooklyn on Easter Sunday in 1959.
