Fairfield County Is More Charitable Than Conn.

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The state of Connecticut might be low on the charitable giving chart, but Fairfield County makes the top 10 most charitable counties in the country.

According to the study performed by The Chronicle of Philanthropy of the 3,115 counties in the country, Fairfield County donated $1.3 billion. That’s an average of 4.4 percent of residents' disposable income, a median contribution of $2,500 per person.

The study says that Connecticut ranks 45th in the nation, but first among the nine states that make up New England. On average residents donate 3.3 percent of their disposable income to charities or non-profits. In comparison, Utah ranked No. 1, with residents giving 10.6 percent of their disposable income.

The study also found that wealthy states and residents aren’t the most generous. The study found that in households earning $50,000 to $75,000 donate an average of 7.6 percent, as opposed to the 4.2 percent of homes that bring in $100,000 or more.
