FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. As the Mega Millions jackpot soars toward the half-billion-dollar mark and breaks all previous records, hopeful Fairfield County residents are rushing out to buy tickets in hopes of hitting the winning numbers.
No one chose all six winning numbers in Tuesday night's drawing, and the jackpot quickly soared to $476 million for the drawing Friday, March 30. The prize has climbed by $113 million since Tuesday night when it was a measly $363 million and it is likely to keep rocketing to new heights until a winner is chosen.
In Tuesday night's drawing, 47 ticket buyers came close choosing five correct numbers, but not the all-important Mega Ball number. They will each win at least $250,000, unless they spent an extra $1 and correctly matched the "megaplier" number, which boosts the second-place prize to $1 million.
Here are the Tuesday's winning numbers: 9, 19, 34, 44, 51 and 24 for the Mega Ball. The megaplier was 3.
The previous record was a $390 million jackpot won March 6, 2007. The game started in 1996 and is now played in 42 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
