Elderly Driver Smashes into Stamford Cafe

STAMFORD, Conn. — An elderly driver crashed through the front of Café Oo La La in Stamford’s Ridgeway Shopping Center Monday injuring nine people, Sergeant Robert Monck of the Stamford Police Department said.

While parking his car in the handicapped parking place in front of the café the driver apparently hit the gas of his Honda instead of the brake and went up over the curb through the glass store front of the café. Monk described the driver, whose name was not known, as in his 70s.

The injured were transported to both Greenwich and Stamford hospitals, Monck said. The severity of the injuries varied and police are at both hospitals interviewing the people involved to find out exactly what happened, he said. Monck was not sure if the driver was injured, but said he was taken to the hospital because of protocol.

Monck described the investigation as in the preliminary stages and said he will know more once the interviews take place. People with more information should contact the Collision, Analysis and Reconstruction Squad, (203-977-4712.
