Dog Food Company Issues Recall

What kind of food is your dog eating? If you bought him or her Marksman and River Run brand dry dog food, those brands have been recalled today due to unacceptably high levels of Aflatoxin, according to Consumer Reports.

Thursday's recall follows one Wednesday by P&G of its Iams ProActive Health Smart Puppy dry dog food, also due to Aflatoxin contamination. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxin that can be dangerous to pets when consumed in large quantities.

The recalled River Run and Marksman dry dog foods were distributed in Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Hawaii, Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as limited areas of Florida and California.

Retailers have already been instructed to remove the affected brands of dog food from store shelves. The dog food was manufactured at Cargill’s Lecompte, Louisiana, facility for one year starting Dec. 1, 2010. No illnesses have been reported, No other Cargill Animal Nutrition pet food products were involved.

The recalled dog food includes the following list of products with packaging date codes (lot numbers) 4K0335 through 4K0365, LL0335 through LL0365, 4K1001 through 4K1335, and LL1001 through LL1335.

Marksman Dog Food 20 percent Protein 10 percent Fat, 40 and 50-pound bags

Marksman Dog Food 28 percent Protein 18 percent Fat, 40 pound bags

Pets that have consumed this product exhibiting symptoms of illness should be seen by a veterinarian. Symptoms can include sluggishness combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, and/or diarrhea.
