FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Fairfield County residents may not be surprised that, despite tough economic times, Connecticut is the second richest state in the nation. An article on 24/7 Wall St. says Connecticut's wealth gets a big boost from commuters who work in New York City and hedge funds in Fairfield County, among other factors.
Connecticut's median income is $65,958 and the state poverty rate is the second lowest in the nation at 8.3 percent, the article says. Connecticut came in second despite areas with "exceptionally low per capita incomes ... such as the cities of Hartford, New Haven, and Bridgeport," the article says.
New Hampshire, with the lowest poverty rate and unemployment nearly half the national rate, is the richest state in the U.S.
Residents may also not be surprised that Fairfield County has the wealthiest and least affordable cities and towns in the state. Darien is the wealthiest town in Connecticut, followed by New Canaan and Weston. Greenwich, with a whopping $1.57 million median home sale price, is considered the least affordable town in Connecticut. The next two least affordable towns are New Canaan and Darien.
