Demolition Work To Start On Two Norwalk Bridges Over I-95

NORWALK, Conn. -- The first phase of demolition work on two bridges in Norwalk will begin Monday as part of the massive project to add travel lanes to I-95 in Norwalk near the Route 7 interchange, the Department of Transportation announced.

The bridges that carry Taylor Avenue and Fairfield Avenue over I-95 will be demolished. The first stage of demolition is scheduled to begin Monday night, Nov. 18, and continue nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday through Thursday until mid-December, weather permitting.

Daytime construction activities will occur from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Drivers should be aware of this detour: Taylor Avenue will be closed between Church Street and Route 1, and Fairfield Avenue between Reed Street and Route 1, until the spring of 2015.

The work is part of a project to construct continuous auxiliary lanes, better known as speed change lanes, to I-95 between Exit 14 for Route 1 and Exit 15 for Route 7 and improvements to Route 1 in Norwalk.

Additional infrastructure improvements include the replacement of three overpass bridges -- Fairfield Avenue, Cedar Street and Taylor Avenue -- that carry local streets over 1-95 and improvements to drainage facilities, pedestrian and traffic operations, including the addition of seven-foot wide sidewalks along both sides of Route 1.

The city of Norwalk is currently reconstructing Cedar Street from Fairfield Avenue to Elmwood Avenue.
