Debicella Takes GOP Nod for Congress

Dan Debicella, Republican candidate for Congress, defeated Rob Merkle and Rick Torres to run for the 4th Congressional District seat.

As of 10:23 p.m., Debicella had garnered 61 percent of the vote, with 32 percent of precincts reporting.

The seat is currently held by Democrat Jim Himes of Greenwich. Debicella and Himes will face off in November.

Debicella, a second-term state senator representing Connecticut's 21st District, was the pick of the Connecticut Republican Party in May. In published reports, he refers to himself as a "fiscal conservative." A moderate, Debicella has voted for tax credits for businesses as well as increased funding for education. In Hartford, he serves on the Appropriations, Public Health and Higher Education committees.

Debicella grew up in Connecticut. He says on his website that he was the first member of his family to attend college full-time and he went on to earn degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. He and his wife live in Shelton.

Merkle has not yet conceded.
