According to the report, global banana crops were virtually wiped out in 1965 due to a Panama-based epidemic that destroyed crops across several continents. Scientists and planters ultimately abandoned the growth of this pre-1965 banana, known as Gros Michel, in favor the disease-resistant, but inferior, Cavendish crop.

Today, the Cavendish is a staple of most people's diets, but is under threat from a deadly fungal assailant, the CNN report said. Cavendish destruction has slowly spread across Asia and Australia, and is responsible for large crop loss on African plantations, according to the CNN report.
