Deadline Looms for Irene Relief

STAMFORD, Conn. ? While many Fairfield County residents were still trying to deal with the aftermath of the weekend storm, U.S. Rep. Jim Himes was mindful of the deadline for Hurricane Irene assistance. Speaking at Stamford’s Government Center Monday, Himes noted that the deadline for Connecticut residents to apply for federal hurricane relief is Thursday.

“The window is closing,” Himes said.

Darrell Habisch, a Federal Emergency Management Agency spokesman who accompanied Himes, said applying takes about 15 minutes and is the first step for individuals. Besides physical damage not covered by insurance, assistance is available for special circumstances such as having to pay for hotel rooms and medication, he said.

“We want to help everyone in need, but you have to apply first,” Habisch said.

Small businesses can apply for Hurricane Irene relief through the Small Business Administration, Himes said. There are a variety of grants and loans to cover hurricane damages, he said.

President Barack Obama has not yet declared a state of emergency for Connecticut for this weekend’s snow storm. If he does, state residents can request federal assistance for this storm as well. Gov. Dannel P. Malloy has asked the President to make a disaster declaration for Connecticut.

You can apply for federal aid online or by calling 800-621-FEMA. There are no more FEMA Disaster Recovery Centers open in the state, Habisch said.
