'Dangerous' Heat Threatens Norwalk

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Extreme heat and humidity roaring into Fairfield County over the next few days could make it feel as hot as 110 degrees, officials warn.

Cooling centers have already opened throughout the region as an "extreme heat watch" has been issued for parts of northern Fairfield County, including Wilton, Weston and Easton. Residents can dial 211 or search www.211ct.org to find a cooling center.

"The combination of heat and humidity will result in poor air quality and dangerous conditions for the elderly, young children and those people with respiratory conditions," Gov. Dannel Malloy said in a statement Tuesday. "For those with elderly neighbors, please consider checking in on them during this extreme heat as well."

The forecast high Thursday is 92, but dense humidity will make it feel as hot as 101, the National Weather Service says. Friday may be even hotter, and there is a slight chance of rain in the afternoon. Temperatures could hit the low 90s again Saturday before falling back into the mid-80s on Sunday.

"Hot and sticky weather is a part of life in Connecticut during the summer months, but the combination of high temperatures and high levels of humidity we'll be experiencing over the next few days can be downright dangerous," Rueben F. Bradford, commissioner of emergency services and public protection, said in a statement. "Limit your outdoor exposure, and if you do need to go outside, make sure to wear sunscreen and drink lots of water."

To keep cool, the National Weather Service recommends:

• Drinking plenty of water;

• Wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing;

• Rescheduling strenuous activity until evening hours; and

• Those working outside should take frequent breaks in the shade or inside where there is air-conditioning.

Everyone also should watch for the signs of heat stroke and heat exhaustion. The Centers for Disease Control and Protection says infants and young children, seniors and people who are overweight or have medical conditions are more at-risk for dangerous heat-related illnesses.

Here are the CDC's signs of heat stroke, a potentially life-threatening condition:

• An extremely high body temperature (above 103°F, orally)

• Red, hot and dry skin (no sweating)

• Rapid, strong pulse

• Throbbing headache

• Dizziness

• Nausea

• Confusion

• Unconsciousness

People showing these symptoms should seek medical attention immediately.

"Although anyone at any time can suffer from heat-related illness, some people are at greater risk than others," Public Health Commissioner Dr. Jewel Mullen said in a release. "It's important to regularly check on infants and young children, people aged 65 or older, and others who you know may be at greatest risk due to the heat."
