Crews Rush Relief to Norwalk Streets

Bela Garrison Sr. and Chris Barnes had used nearly 50 heavy bags of asphalt to patch Norwalk’s potholes by the time they got to Water Street mid-morning Wednesday. With mild, spring-like weather refreshing the neighborhoods around the Norwalk River, the two-man Department of Public Works crew was busy emptying their 50-pound bags of “coal patch” and tamping temporary fixes down on the ravages of a brutal winter.

“We’ll be doing this every day of the week, until it gets warm,” said Garrison as Barnes, in the middle of traffic, filled a pothole with thick asphalt. “Then we’ll get the regular hot patch, cut out sections of streets and put them back in.”

Garrison then moved in and smoothed Barnes’ pile into an almost perfectly square pothole near Haviland Street.
