Connecticut Jobless Rate Drops Slightly

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Some 600 jobs were added in Connecticut in December, bringing the 2011 total to 9,000 new jobs, the state's labor department announced Monday.

“After a disappointing performance in the third quarter of 2011, it appears that Connecticut’s labor market has returned to a modest pace toward recovery,” Andy Condon, director of the Office of Research, said on the labor department's website. "Our declining unemployment rate is particularly good news. However, forecasts for job growth in 2012 remain cautious and uncertain with most analysts predicting levels much like what we saw this past year.”

December's increase came after a loss of 1,400 jobs in November. Last month's drop brings the state's jobless rate down to 8.2 percent, the lowest it has been since May 2009, the Department of Labor said. Last December, the unemployment rate was 9 percent.
