U.S. Reps. Jim Himes and Rosa DeLauro are calling for an official investigation into the July 22 incident in which a Metro-North train stalled in Westport, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded on the train in excessive heat with no air-conditioning.
Himes, D-4th District, and DeLauro, D-3rd District, are urging Metro-North officials to establish procedures for responding to train outages that include specific protocols for communicating with passengers.
"While incidents like this illustrate the dire need to invest in our transportation infrastructure, especially trains in the Northeast, we absolutely must uphold the highest standards of passenger safety," Himes said in a statement.
"I appreciate that Metro-North has apologized to passengers, but we need procedures in place to ensure future travelers remain safe and well-informed."
Himes and DeLauro submitted a letter to Jay H. Walder, chairman and CEO of Metro Transit Authority, and Howard R. Permut, president of Metro Transit Authority Metro-North Railroad.

Westport First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, Westport fire officials and state Sen. Toni Boucher, R-Wilton, are scheduled to meet with Metro-North officials Friday morning to discuss the incident. Boucher represents Bethel, New Canaan, Redding, Ridgefield, Weston, Westport and Wilton.
