CL&P Preparing For Power Outages Tonight

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — Connecticut Light & Power is preparing to respond as "significant power outages" are possible during severe thunderstorms expected to hit Fairfield County this evening and tonight, the state says. 

The utility, which dealt with a record number of power outages after the October blizzard, says it is has already has requested assistance from crews in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. 

"We want our customers to know that we're closely monitoring weather forecasts and are prepared to respond quickly and safely in the event of widespread power outages," the company says in a statement on its website. "Our town liaisons will be in direct communication with each community we serve throughout the storm to keep them updated on restoration efforts."

The Connecticut Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security described the storms as a "significant impact event with the potential for widespread tree damage in some areas and a significant number of power outages."

Gov. Dannel Malloy has partially activated the state's Emergency Operations Center on Thursday afternoon to quicken the response to any power outages and damage.
