Check Out The SoNo Arts Celebration

NORWALK, Conn. – The exhibits of 150 artists, live music from more than 20 bands, hands on kids arts programs and the puppet parade highlight the 37th annual SoNo Arts Celebration which continues through Sunday.

Up to 80,000 people  may attend, according to Sue Brown-Gordon, a  festival director, which could make it the biggest event in the celebration’s history.

The event is held on Washington, North and South Main streets, with music performances on three stages, including the Main and Bourbon street stages on Washington and the Children Arts Playground stage on South Main.

Painters, photographers, jewelers and other artists exhibited their work at booths on Washington Street. Irwin Goldman, 82, was working on a painting in front of his booth on Saturday afternoon. He said he’s been painting for 40 years and his work includes seascapes and forest scenes painted with acrylics.

“I love doing all four seasons and paint the seascapes because I used to live on Long Island,” he said.

The puppet parade on Sunday is the highlight of the event with more than 100 puppets, according to Keith Murray, a volunteer from Stamford. The largest puppets were made by a puppeteer but most were made by community members, he said.

The parade starts at 1:30 p.m. with members of the public invited to march in the parade with their favorite puppet. Anyone interested in marching should stop by parade headquarters at 41 South Main St. at noon Sunday.
