STAMFORD, Conn. Gov. Dannel Malloy met with Fairfield County business leaders Wednesday in Stamford to get their input on ways to increase employment. And while many asked for tax breaks and other incentives, one said he just wants to see more people working so they can keep a roof over their head.
We need hot dog stands on corners so that guy can pay his mortgage, Paul Bailo, CEO of Phone Interview Pro, said after the meeting.
Bailo told the governor the state should offer classes to give the unemployed the skills they need to find jobs. He said he has given lectures where people who had worked at one place for a long time had forgotten how to interview for a job as well as other job-search skills.
Malloy told the executives he plans to seek incentives for businesses to hire veterans and the unemployed.
The governor began his jobs tour in June and has made over 70 stops across the state seeking ways to create jobs. He said he will release a bipartisan package to help put ideas from the tour in place, and is willing to take parts out to win bipartisan backing. The package is tentatively scheduled to be released next week, Malloy said.
David Lewis, president and co-founder of the CEO Roundtable, said he has always found the governor to be very candid and honest. He said he set up Wednesdays forum at High Ridge Corporate Park to give members the opportunity to share their ideas.
We hope this translates into something tangible and useful for job growth, Lewis said after the meeting.
Founded in 2001, the CEO Roundtable is a networking group where top-level executives discuss successes, opportunities and the challenges they face.
