"We have received confirmation from the CDC that confirms our preliminary result that the patient admitted to Yale-New Haven Hospital late Wednesday night does not have the Ebola virus," Dr. Thomas Balcezak, chief medical officer of Yale-New Haven Hospital, said in a statement.
The patient, a medical student at Yale, had been admitted and isolated Wednesday night after complaining of a fever, one of the symptoms of Ebola.
The student had recently returned from a trip to Liberia. Hospital officials said the student had been on voluntary sequestration and was self-monitoring his health, and had not been doing field work with Ebola patients in Liberia.
Preliminary tests had come back negative for the Ebola virus Thursday evening, but Balcezak said the hospital was still awaiting official confirmation from the CDC before fully ruling it out.
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy held a press conference Thursday after news broke of the possible Ebola case in New Haven. He and Public Health Commissioner Jewel Mullen said they were ordering all hospitals in the state to perform Ebola preparedness drills, and said the state was in contact with the CDC to react quickly should anyone in Connecticut test positive for the virus.
