The Connecticut State Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz does not meet the qualifications to run for attorney general, CTMirror.org reports. This ends Bysiewicz's campaign for Richard Blumenthals abandoned seat.
The Republican Party took the case to the Supreme Court to challenge a ruling that Byseiwiczs tenure as secretary of the state constituted a practice of law. The court decided her work did not fulfill the 10 years of experience required under statute.
On May 12, Bysiewicz said in a press release, "I am very pleased that the Supreme Court has granted my request to expedite this case so that we have a quick, clear and final decision prior to the Democratic State Convention.
The legal battle began when Bysiewicz sought a declaratory statement that she either met the requirements or the statute was unconstitutional. Superior Court Judge Michael Sheldon ruled in Bysiewicz favor, giving her the 10 years of experience she needs for the attorney generals position. The Republican Party appealed the decision.
With the Democratic State Convention starting on Friday, George Jepsen now stands as the sole Democratic candidate for the seat.
