People in Norwalk today appeared willing to give Richard Blumenthal the benefit of the doubt. Learning more about the comments published in The New York Times about his military service, some wondered if the attorney generals remarks had been taken out of context. Others questioned whether they accurately portrayed his intent. At the very least, people said they want additional information.
Im going to want to do more research, said Drew Vinton, who said he wasnt willing to take the early reports at face value. I would want to see the quotes in context. I want to see if he said something with the intent to mislead.
Blumenthals reputation as Connecticuts attorney general seemed to outweigh peoples first impressions about the controversy. Hes been super as attorney general, said Jeff Denham, who was waiting at the Norwak train station to return home to Bridgeport. Denham said he was just beginning to learn details and included himself among those who wanted to know the context. It would seem pretty hypocritical if he did actually say these things, he said. Denham added the issue would have little effect upon his vote this November. He said he would vote for the Democratic senate candidate, regardless.
It wont change my vote at all, said Marianne Foley. I know him to be forthcoming, compassionate, super intelligent and a man of great integrity. Foley said she had worked with Blumenthal and his staff on the issue of lyme disease. His office provided information and support as she advocated for proper treatment and insurance coverage for people affected by the disease. She said she considers the reported comments a small issue, especially since Blumenthal did serve in the armed forces. People need to look at the big picture, she said. That is our job. There are so many more pressing issues in this country.
Vinton said he is usually well-versed in political issues but said it is still early in the campaign. He intends to take the time to learn more but said, If I see that he did intend to mislead, I will be a touch bummed out.
Blumenthal himself said he regrets misspeaking on a few occasions but said he will not allow anyone to impugn his record of service.
