Artists Turn Storefronts into Galleries

Local artists transformed SoNo storefronts into public art spaces this weekend. Sponsored by the Visual Arts Committee of the Norwalk Arts Commission, the project turns empty real estate into temporary gallery space. “The idea is to keep Norwalk vibrant and help spur economic development at the same time,” said Dennis Bradbury, committee chairman.

Painters, photographers and sculptors spent all day Saturday installing their work. Developers F.D. Rich and Q Properties lent the 23 spaces along North and South Main Street and Washington Street for three months or until they lease the spaces, whichever comes first. “We hope they do lease the spaces,” said Jackie Lightfield, chairwoman of the Arts Commission. “With good economic activity, people will buy art, too.”

Painter Joanne Keane filled one of the windows of the F.D. Rich Building on South Main Street with her installation “Memories of the Light in my Bedroom.” The installation of hanging light bulbs and paintings that incorporate written words became a family affair as she was assisted by her husband, Phil, and her son Tiernan, 10.
