Armed Robbers Hit Norwalk Store ... Again

The owner of a Wall Street grocery store grabbed a lead pipe and chased two men who had just robbed him Saturday night, to no avail. It was the second time in just over two weeks that bandits fitting the same description hit the store, robbing it of cigarettes and cash.

Saturday’s robbery at R & G Grocery, located at 28 Wall St., happened just before 10 p.m. Two skinny men wearing face masks came into the store, according to Norwalk Police Sgt. James Walsh. One of them flashed a small caliber handgun and demanded money. Another went behind the counter and took several packages of cigarettes. The only person in the store was the clerk.

On Friday, Feb. 25, several people were in the store when two or three masked men came in.  One of them had a handgun and forced the patrons onto the floor. They emptied the cash register and stole cigarettes. Then they ran out.

This time, the owner chased them down Main Street and up High Street, where he lost them. He flagged down a Norwalk Police officer responding to a call from the owner’s wife. Police brought in a Connecticut State Police canine officer, but the dog could not get a scent.

The store was also held up in December 2009, according to The Hour.

Also on the police blotter:

? Police received several calls of shots fired near 21 ½ Ward St. Friday at 7 p.m. One resident saw a flash inside a car, but couldn’t describe the vehicle. Witnesses gave conflicting reports on which way the vehicle went. Police canvassed the area and did not find shell casings.

One resident has a security camera and promised to review the footage. The detective bureau is investigating.

? A 19-year-old man was driving too fast on Wolfpit Avenue early Sunday morning and rolled over his 1997 Volkswagen Jetta, police reported. He walked away from the accident apparently uninjured, but was taken to Norwalk Hospital for observation.
