App Fails to Keep Weston Woman from Norwalk Arrest

NORWALK, Conn. – A Weston woman tried to use her iPhone as proof she wasn't intoxicated while she drove the wrong way on a one-way street in South Norwalk early Sunday, Norwalk Police say.

Madeline Smith, 23, of 111 High Acre Road said she had measured her blood-alcohol level with an app before getting into the car to drive, Sgt. Lisa Cotto said.

Officer Tyrone Boyd spotted Smith going the wrong way up Haviland Street in a 1999 Honda at 2:05 a.m., Cotto said. She was adamant she was not intoxicated and was surprised when she failed a field sobriety test, police said. She blew a 0.134 on her first test with a police breathalyzer, and a 0.120 the second time, police said.

Boyd looked at the Breathalyzer app on her iPhone and found it was for novelty purposes, Cotto said. A blood-alcohol level must be entered by the user, who can then use the phone to convince a friend they are too drunk to drive. Smith hadn't programmed the app, so when she tested herself, the numbers came up as zero, Cotto said.

Smith was charged with driving the wrong way down a one-way street and driving under the influence. Bond was set at $100 and her court date is June 7.
