It might have been a tragedy. Norwalk resident Laura Knudson and her friend, Caryn Fleming, were driving to check on Laura's mother at around 7:30 p.m. Saturday, after her mother's power has gone out. As she turned a corner onto Couch St., Fleming her suddenly screamed. "I put my brakes on and realized that there was a tree falling on my car," she said. The windshield started collapsing but at first, she said, she didn't know how severe the strike was. It was more a gentle fall, so I didnt hear a crack, a noise, nothing.
Fortunately, neither passenger was hurt. They were stranded in the car for 40 minutes, waiting for the police to arrive. From her seat, Knudson saw that the tree had ripped down an electric pole and the pole was leaning toward the car. "I was petrified," she said. She feared that the pole would fall on the car, but they didn't dare try to escape because there were power lines on the ground.
At first, the police couldn't even approach the car because of the live wires around it. But a crew from South Norwalk Electric arrived and worked quickly to cut off the power. That was when Knudsen says she finally felt safe. The police and the electric crew got Knudson and Fleming safely out of the car. "Both of us are very fortunate and feel very lucky that nothing happened to us, said Knudsen.
