$80 Coat Could Get Norwalk Woman Deported

An $80 coat has brought a 35-year-old Norwalk woman to the attention of immigration authorities, Norwalk Police say. Sala Lopez-Castro of West Avenue allegedly attempted to shoplift the coat at Kohl's Thursday afternoon.

She was arrested and charged with criminal impersonation and larceny. Bond was $10,000. But that isn't all – immigration will resume an investigation that has been dormant for more than a decade.

Police say the suspect told them her name was Yolanda Lopez. When that didn't work out, officers said she said her name was Zoila Lopez-Castro. Police learned the truth: She is Sala Lopez-Castro, who was arrested in March 2000  in Arizona by immigration authorities. There is a detainer out on her. This is not a warrant but part of the process to determine if the person is subject to removal from the U.S.

Also on the police blotter:

? Someone chose an inconspicuous vehicle to steal Wednesday morning – a Safelite Autoglass van. The thief got away cleanly, and police were unable to catch him, or her. The van was found parked and unoccupied on South Main Street several hours later.
