Fifty thousand dollars has been added to the reward fund created to help find the killer of Jose Joaquin Morales.
Morales, 33 when he died, was an employee of the Shell station on West Avenue. He was shot shortly after 2 a.m. on October 10, 2009 by one of two robbers, whose actions were captured on video surveillance tapes. The tapes, released by the Norwalk Police, show two robbers, concealed by masks and wearing black hoodies. As the robbers left the store, one turned and shot Morales in the head. Morales was taken to Yale-New haven hospital. Two days later, Morales' family removed him from life support.
Norwalk Police Chief Harry Rilling asked State prosecutor David Cohen recently to request the reward money from Governor M. Jodi Rell. State law provides the Governor with a pool of money to be used for rewards for those who help solve crimes.
An anonymous ten thousand dollar contribution kicked off the formation of the reward fund two weeks ago.
According to Lt. Paul Resnick, investigators suspect that the Shell station robbery is linked to similar robberies along the I-95 corridor. The police believe that the reward money will revive interest in the case . Sixty thousand dollars is now being offered for information leading to the killer's arrest and conviction.
