A Walmart loss prevention officer used a parking lot security camera to zoom in on the license plate of a car Thursday, leading to the arrest of three men who had allegedly stolen a television and a computer.
Police stopped the men down the road. Arrested were three brothers, Peter Lipusz, 35, of Woodbridge; John Lipusz, 42, of Newtown; and Eric Lipusz, 38, also of Newtown. As they were being processed at the police station, Eric Lipusz allegedly said, "C'mon, man, we're heroin addicts, please lower our bond."
Police were alerted to the theft at the Walmart on Connecticut Avenue at 10:30 a.m. They stopped the suspects' car in front of the Silver Star Diner, where they fond a 32-inch Vizio LCD television in the trunk and an HP Desktop PC and monitor in the backseat. Hypodermic needles were lodged between the backseat and the front passenger door.
Store personnel allegedly watched John Lipusz walk past the registers with the computer in his cart and wait until the store's greeter was distracted before leaving with it. They also used their cameras to watch Eric Lipusz put the television in the trunk.
The computer was worth $698, and the television was worth $468. Peter Lipusz and Eric Lipusz were charged with larceny, conspiracy and possession of drug paraphernalia. John Lipusz was charged with larceny, conspiracy and carrying a dangerous weapon, a silver and black knife. Bond for each was set at $25,000.
