2 Killed in Fiery Crash on I-95 in Darien

Two people were killed and one person arrested after a fiery crash closed Interstate 95 North on Saturday morning, Lt. Paul Vance of the Connecticut State Police confirmed. An overturned tractor-trailer and fire between exits 9 and 10 caused I-95 north to close for several hours until the afternoon while workers cleared up the accident.

At 6:10 a.m., Yadira Torres, 25, of Hartford, lost control of her Dodge SUV and swerved into the center lane, colliding with a tractor-trailer. The tractor-trailer overturned, and the container separated, causing a fire. The driver of the tractor-trailer was pronounced dead on the scene. Vance said nearby drivers freed the tractor-trailer's passenger from the wreck. She was transported to Stamford Hospital, where she later died of her injuries.

In addition to Torres, the SUV carried three passengers, all of whom were taken to Norwalk Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Torres was charged with two counts of second-degree manslaughter, operating a vehicle under the influence and reckless driving. She was being held on $100,000 bond and will go to court Monday.

The Darien and Noroton Heights Fire Department put out the fire. Darien, Stamford and Norwalk EMS attended to the victims.
