Try Biking to Work, Norwalk

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – After days of rain and gray skies, what better way for Norwalk and Stamford residents to chase away the blues than to bike to work.

Friday, rain or shine, National Bike to Work Day kicks off in Norwalk at the South Norwalk Rail Station and in Stamford at Columbus Park in Stamford from 7:30 to 9 a.m.

Hosted by the South Western Regional Planning Agency and Bike Walk Connecticut, the event is the agencies' way of encouraging people to reduce traffic and pollution.

Both events will offer refreshments and giveaways to bike commuters who stop by.  The Stamford event will also feature helmet and bike safety checks courtesy of Danny’s Cycles. In addition, cyclists will have the opportunity to test out the bike racks on buses provided by Norwalk Transit District and CTTransit.

Both groups offer these tips for those planning to bike to work:

  • Always wear a helmet and make sure it fits properly.
  • Any type of bike will do. If you haven’t ridden in some time, have your bike checked over by your local bike shop.
  • Choose a route that is most comfortable for you – your bike commute route might differ from the route you follow when you drive.
  • Ride in the right-most lane in the direction of traffic. Never ride facing traffic.
  • Obey all stop signs, traffic lights and lane markings.
  • Look before you change lanes or signal a turn; indicate your intention, then act.
  • Be visible and predictable at all times; wear bright clothing and signal turns.
