Traffic was light on the state's highways, and speeds were reduced to 30 to 40 mph on I-95, I-84 and the Merritt Parkway. Traffic cameras from the state Department of Transportation showed snow-covered highways and very light but slow-moving traffic.
With snow falling at the rate of 1 to 2 inches per hour, according to the National Weather Service, it was hard for plows to keep up.
The snow is expected to continue until midnight in Fairfield County, with periods of sleet and freezing rain during the afternoon. A total of 10 to 14 inches of snow could pile up by the end of the storm.
"Roads are slippery. Accidents [and] spin outs increasing," the Connecticut State Police tweeted at 7 a.m. "Slow speeds a must. Stay off roads if possible."
Gov. Dannel Malloy banned tandem tractor-trailers from state highways as of 4 a.m.
