A Fairfield County family will soon get a chance to buy Connecticuts first LEED-certified home. And if you make a donation to help build it, you can be there when the lucky familys name is announced.
The Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust will soon complete its Buy a Brick, Build a Home project, which collected donations to build a home certified by the Environmental Protection Agency for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program for eco-friendly buildings. The group is now accepting applications for the housing lottery, which will give the winner the right to buy the Holly Street home when it is completed.
Understanding that buying a home may be a daunting task, [Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust] provides affordable homeownership opportunities and support to first-time homeowners in making homeownership a reality and more importantly keeping it, said Elizabeth Torres, the organizations executive director.
The lottery is open to families earning less than 80 percent of the areas median income ($64,200) who do not already own a home. The winner will be able to buy the home for $225,000. The house will include a two-bedroom apartment, offering the owners a chance to earn income on their housing investment.
The trust will announce the winner at its second annual Buy a Brick, Build a House fundraiser Sept. 22. For a $50 donation, Fairfield County residents can tour the new house and enjoy a night of food and music on the 22nd. We hope the community will come out and join us in celebrating this green affordable home and all the work that were doing to help Bridgeport thrive, Torres said.
The event will take place on Holly Street in Bridgeport. For more information on the event or how to be a sponsor, contact Takeia McAlister at (203) 249-5355 or at takeia@mac.com.
