Fri. July 22-Tues. July 26 The first Pequot Library sale, in 1961, gathered 6,000 volumes for book lovers to peruse. Now, its tables groan with a whopping 140,000 volumes, making it one of the biggest -- and coolest -- book sales in New England, with way more than just books. Fri. July 22, 7:30 p.m. What's cooler than the night sky? Maybe Saturn in summer mode, which Stamford Museum & Nature Center shines a light on during astronomy night. Fri. July 22, 6-9 p.m. Lake Compounce After Dark features the eternally cool music of The Beatles as performed by special tribute band, Number Nine, at the gazebo by the lake. For more information, visit the park's website.
Fri. July 22-Sun. July 24 Music lovers convene in Bridgeport for cool and continuous performances at the music festival, The Gathering of the Vibes. Sunday is designated Family Day giving those 15 and under free admission with a parent or legal guardian. Painting, children's entertainers, face painting, costume making, arts and crafts, dancing with life-sized puppets, or riding the 85 foot high Ferris wheel and popular Orbitron are on the agenda.. July 24 Summer Theatre of New Canaan's weekend performances at Waveny Park include the debut of cool and vivacious mouse heroine, Lilly in "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse," based on Peter Henkes best selling book series for early readers. Shows take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday and noon on Sunday. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, more beloved characters, Frog and Toad, perform in "A Year with Frog & Toad," a musical based on the Arnold Lobell early reading book series about friendships. Sat., July 23, 1-3 p.m. South Salem, NY's Wolf Conservation Center hosts master dog trainer William Berloni (and friend) for a special talk celebrating the wolf's canine cousin the dog. For more than 30 years, Berloni and colleagues have trained animals for the stage. Mostly rescued from shelters, they learn to become thespians. If that isn't cool, what is? Sat. July 23 Trek to New London (the car will be cool, right?) for a special festival, Fish Tales, Tugs & Sails from 11 a.m. 5 p.m. This nautically themed family event at New Londons historic waterfront features authors and illustrators including Lynne Cherry and Uri Shulevitz, live, interactive professional children's entertainers, Project Oceanology's touch tanks, a United States Coast Guard cutter, the Mystic Whaler and working tugboats. Sat.July 23 & Sun. July 24 Mystic Seaport hosts some very cool classic vessels gathered for an Antique & Classic Boat Rendezvous. Stroll the waterfront where a display of restored boats built before 1965, including cruisers, sailboats, runabouts and launches, line up.
