FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. In the beautiful towns of Fairfield County, it seems that adults in the community often outshine the power the rising generation has. Teenagers are the future, and now more than ever, the effect of their presence is showing.
During this ongoing recession, it seems that more and more young adults in the area are looking for work. This greatly affects local businesses, including supermarkets, pharmacies, clothing stores and other businesses that hire teenagers. Teenagers also contribute as consumers. Clothing stores and restaurants are direct targets of teen buyers. For example, Weston High Schools campus is open and students often go to lunch at nearby food joints such as Five Guys, Panera or Bertuccis.
Teenagers also have a big influence on seniors. Technology has made extraordinary advancements in just the last few years and it only continues to improve. Adults depend on their own children and others in the community to help them keep up with new technology. Teens also teach their younger siblings and peers how to use technology.
The iPhone, iPad and Facebook are becoming a way of life, and it is up to those who are growing up with it to explain it to those who are unfamiliar with it. This is essential as it helps adults keep up-to-date with the tough competition in the business world.
In places like Fairfield County, finding entertainment can be difficult and our towns have become centered on high school sports. After school and on the weekends, there are practices, scrimmages, pickup games and tournaments in almost every sport. Teenagers come out to support their peers during games and adults come to watch their children. Even parents whose kids are not involved in sports come - not so much for the action but to hang out with friends and neighbors.
Teen athletes are future major league athletes and watching them provides everyone with a sense of hope for what is to come.
Teenagers today provide us with more than we realize. They are a large target for the consumer market, as well as employees; they are teachers to adults and strong influences on the generation that will follow them; they are a source of pleasure and pride for others in town. In our small, close-knit area, it essential that we recognize teenagers and everything they provide us with.
