Local Doctor Helps Kids Learn To Focus

STAMFORD, Conn. — As children head back to school Tuesday, they will need to keep their focus to succeed in the classroom. That could be a difficult task for children who have problems paying attention.

To help children with such problems, Dr. Lee Combrinck-Graham has started Finding Your Focus, a program she designed to help children understand their problems and learn to best cope with them at school and at home.

“I emphasize that everyone is different and this is why they are,” Combrinck-Graham, the medical director of Jewish Family Services, said of her program. It is a unique program because she does not only meet with the child and explain coping techniques, but she also brings the family in for therapy as well. Combrinck-Graham says she does this because often her patients are misunderstood by their parents and siblings, and they often get picked on or deemed “out of control.”

Combrinck-Graham works with the family members to help them understand that the child has a real problem and helps them determine ways for the patient to fit in with the rest of the family, such as by doing household chores.

Before accepting a child into the program, Combrinck-Graham gets a medical history and does her own evaluation to make sure the attention issues fit her program. She will then meet and speak with the child, making sure they understand the issue before bringing in the patient’s family.

Finding Your Focus is an insurance reimbursable program and is available to children from age 4 through high school. For more information, contact Eve Moskowitz, director of clinical services, at 203-921-4161 or emoskowitz@ctjfs.org.

Jewish Family Service helps people and families of all denominations from Stamford, New Canaan, Darien, Westport, Weston, Wilton and Norwalk.
