Brian Fitzgerald never had an interest in playing golf, but after his two sons took up the sport, he hit the links himself to have an activity they could share. He even began teaching his grandchildren how to play.
It was the greatest time for him, Gay Fitzgerald said of her husbands love to be with his family. Brian Fitzgerald died in August 2010 of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrigs disease.
On Thursday, the Fitzgerald family was brought together when Stamford-based Patriot National Bank held its second annual fundraiser for ALS awareness at My Three Sons family fun center in Norwalk. Karey Fitzgerald was happy to see members of the community support her father, who had been the banks president.
He was always doing for others, and now everybody gives for him, Karey said, fighting back tears.
People were asked to make a minimum $5 donation at the door for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the worlds largest nonprofit provider of ALS services and funder of ALS research. Donations entitled the donor to free games of laser tag, soft gym and Balladium at the arcade.
Patriot National Bank considers itself a community bank that looks for ways to help members of the communities it serves, bank marketing director Lisa Grant said. In addition to donations at the door, the bank received baked goods from its bakery customers to sell.
People are coming out of the woodwork to help support the cause, said Grant.
Fitzgerald, a lifelong Norwalk resident, was diagnosed with ALS in 2008.
