The group recently received approval for its request from the Planning Committee of the Common Council, but still needs full council approval next month.

The block grant program is funded through a federal grant of about $1 million to help local nonprofit organizations and agencies pay for capital improvements and efforts designed to help residents and families.

"The SNCC is very excited about the grant approval,” said SNCC Chairman Warren Peña in a statement. Peña is also a member of the Common Council. “The Center will utilize the grant by upgrading the building’s first floor bathrooms and then we'll look to reconstruct our waiting room or reception area which will give the Center a brand new look. In the next few weeks, we'll be putting together an RFP and bidding the project out. This is the first step in our re-branding initiative."
