GREENWICH, Conn. Works by Rembrandt will be featured for the first time in Greenwich in an exhibit at the Bruce Museum.
Beginning Sept. 24 and running through Jan. 8, the exhibition of Drawings by Rembrandt, his Students and Circle from the Maida and George Abrams Collection presents highlights from a private collection of Dutch drawings, assembled over five decades by collectors George and Maida Abrams. The show will feature 10 works by Rembrandt and 50 drawings by his pupils and followers.
Drawings by Rembrandt showcases pen drawings, including figures studies made from life, finished drawings composed in the studio and landscape studies. A total of 28 students and other artists with connections to Rembrandt complement his works. The show investigates the teaching practices of Rembrandt, showing, for example, a series of illustrations designed to convey narrative drama of a historical subject.
Museum Executive Director Peter C. Sutton, a specialist in Northern Baroque art, organized the show. The collection has been past exhibited at Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the British Museum in London and the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard.
