Readers Recall 9/11, Look Ahead on Facebook

Reader Kathryn Herbert says she was feeding her 18-month-old daughter when she turned on the TV and watched the second tower of the World Trade Center collapse. Her brother, Fairfield resident Adam Lewis, was on the 89th floor.

"It was certainly a gasping moment and one that is indelibly etched in my brain forever," she wrote on The Daily Norwalk's Facebook page Monday.

Lewis was one of the 148 Connecticut victims of the 9/11 attacks. Spurred by the death of Osama bin Laden, readers are remembering lost loved ones and sharing other conflicting emotions as they recall Sept. 11 and look to the future on the Facebook pages of Main Street Connect's network of community news websites.

"It is my personal feeling that life as we know it now will not change dramatically," Linda J. Lyons wrote on The Daily Stamford's Facebook page. "However, the 'feel good energy' will give the American people hope as we move forward. Change always takes place gradually."

Warren Ransom wrote on The Daily Darien's Facebook page that on Sept. 11, 2001, he was in his office, which faced the World Trade Center.

"I saw the second plane hit with a massive fireball and told everyone to go home immediately as there was more to this than just a plane crash, and we were on the 39th floor of our building," he said. Ransom caught one of the last trains out of Grand Central and lost all cell-phone reception, he said.

Debby Weeks Denke says she was with kids and friends Sept. 11. "I was at a play group with my infant and 1- and 3-year-old and all the moms watched on TV and cried while our kids played in the other room," she wrote on The Daily Norwalk's Facebook page.

Here are some other user comments from Facebook:

• Miguel Cruz: I was on Knorr Street in Norwalk working on a water main when my mom called me and told me what was happening.

• Kate Gans Lucas: I was in York, England, on vacation. We listened to the whole thing on a BBC radio on our way back to London.

• Claire Lyons: I was headed to special recess in 5th grade when a lady came in to pick up her child and told our gym teacher a plane had hit the trade centers.
