Pick Your Weekend's Palette

Want a colorful weekend? Choose some red hot festivals or a canoe tour through a pastel green marsh, perhaps a meet up with cows in basic black and white or a concert of bubbly bluegrass music. With so many hued happenings on the palette, your weekend is bound to be vivid. Here's the rundown:

Easton's 76th Annual Fireman's Carnival, Fri. Aug. 5-Sat. Aug. 6 is stocked with rides like bumper cars, The Ali Baba, Rip Cord, and more as well as games aplenty, all of which will satisfy younger constituents. Food tents overflowing with meal specials as well as sandwiches, grinders, fries and the Carnival's famous peach shortcake will get a unanimous vote from the adults. Friday evening, Aug. 5 through Sunday, Aug. 7, lose yourself in a creative rainbow of music, dance, arts and crafts bracketing South Norwalk at this year's SoNo Arts Celebration. Little visitors can express themselves at a children's art playground and contribute to murals, as well as thrill to the giant puppets who'll tower through the crowd in Sunday's parade. Fri., Aug. 5-Sun., Aug. 7, Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival, in East Hartford, Conn., draws local, regional and national bluegrass performers, for a weekend of stupendous picking, plucking, strumming and merry melodies. This "music of the mountains in the heart of the city" event also provides family activities, vendors and eclectic food from Philly Steak, to organic ice cream to Polish sausage and more. Sift through The Keeler Tavern Museum's annual Antiques and Treasures Sale Fri. Aug. 5-Sun. Aug. 7,  where an extensive Civil War collection, fine antiques and jewelry, patio and country casual furniture, designer vintage clothing, and bargains yield a cornucopia of bounty. Hours are: Fri. and Sat. 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sun., noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free except for Friday's special early buying from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. which costs $10 per person. The Litchfield Jazz Festival pulses on Fri. Aug. 5-Sun. Aug. 7, when its stellar array of performers including The Bronx Horns, The Clayton Brothers, Jimmy Heath Big Band and many more, take the stage.  The setting is the picturesque Kent School, in Kent, Conn., and parties and open jam sessions help keep the lively vibe going. On Sat. Aug. 6. dip into paddle and glide mode in a canoe slicing the water of The Charles Wheeler Salt Marsh at Milford Point. The Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center in Milford guides this family canoe tour, highlights of which include the abundant wildlife and this season’s four Osprey chicks. You know the milk carton, now stop by The Farmer's Cow for a free tour and corn roast in Franklin, Conn. on Sat., Aug. 6, from 1-3 p.m. The farm has operated for six generations, and visitors are invited to view its rotary milking parlor, walk the barns and meet its marvelous milking cows. On Sat. Aug. 6 and Sun. Aug. 7, entertainer Chris Rowlands brings his ebullient performance of kid-friendly songs, dance, puppets, and colorful props to The Beardsley Zoo, in shows at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Everything's interactive and kids are encouraged to trade their seats for the stage, where they sing along and learn about animals and the environment.  Free with general admission.
