Luckily, we're not expected to meet the standards we have for dogs. Take four year old Apple. He really isn't a fan of other dogs; he doesn't get along with them. Some people feel likewise about people. And it's allowed. But, of course, in dogs, it's sometimes considered a character flaw. Apple was never exposed to other canines and so didn't have a chance to acclimate.
Apple's anti-dog stance was almost his undoing. Another shelter put him on the destroy list. Someone there, a fan, called PAWS in Norwalk, hoping for another chance for this lively little personality. On meeting him, PAWS discovered a very loving and affectionate dog who is mad for people. He's also a bit of an escape artist and thinks it's a game to run away and play. He is very friendly, happy and shows his excitement by barking. He'll be your life-long buddy, happy to ride around or take a long walk but needs an owner who can keep him on point and get him to dial down the excitement from time to time. It's do-able and worth doing because he wants to please. He's micro-chipped, neutered and up-to-date with his vaccinations.
Apple's been with PAWS for a while now. The volunteers love to hang out with him. "Hes a happy, playful boy who listens well and accepts corrections easily if he knows that his person is the boss," says Annie, one of the volunteers. PAWS Director Adrienne Statfield says, "He can run like the wind. But after hes had plenty of exercise, hes happy to crawl up in his bed, or sit next to you with his head in your lap. She adds, Apple is going to be the apple of some lucky persons eye." For more information, visit PAWS's website or call (203) 750-9572.
