Norwalk resident Gillian Marshall inherited her passion for South Asia from her uncle, who spent time there as a British political officer in the 1930s. Through her photography, Marshall strives to capture the spirit of the region and share it with people who may never see it in person.
"I feel it's my destiny. If I can bring people a sense of the culture, the passion, the color, the gloriousness of the region, then my dream will be fulfilled," she said at the opening reception for an exhibit of her work on display at Upper Crust Bakery and Café.
"South Asia is such a kaleidoscope of culture and color," she said. In India, for example, each state has its own separate feel, and the dramatic differences can be seen as you travel throughout the country. "Each has its own beauty, its own significance, its own essential lifestyle."
Marshall loves to travel to South Asia each year to take photographs, saying that enjoys getting away from the hectic and programmed lives that Americans live.
"The first time I went to India, I felt a natural affinity for it, a comfort. People over there live utterly in the moment. It's a frame of mind that's difficult to attain over here."
As Marshall travels, she keeps two cameras at hand, one wide-angle lens and one zoom lens. She does not focus on one particular type of subject, instead she shoots whatever strikes her as visually fascinating. "I'm an open book. I shoot what I see. God gave me this eye, and through experimenting and developing it, my learning grows."
