GREENWICH, Conn. New Canaan may have been the latest hotspot for the Occupy Wall Street movement, but a twitter feed has sprung up this month to Occupy Greenwich in a satirical fashion.
OccupyGreenwich's tongue-in-cheek Twitter page is illustrated with a photo of a young, blonde Caucasian man wearing a tweed blazer, preppy tie and a luxe sweater wrapped around his shoulders. The top of the page reads, Shake a stick at Wall Street if you like, but the Real 1 percent left for Hedgistan long ago and youre not welcome here. Release the hounds!
Over the weekend, nearly 100 protesters went to the New Canaan home of General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt to take part in the first known Occupy Wall Street rally in Fairfield County. The movement began a month ago in Zuccotti Park in Manhattan. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have rallied around the world in large and small cities.
Greenwich, with the highest median income in the state, may see a movement in the coming days. But for now, its just fun and games for OccupyGreenwich, which has just 37 followers since its first tweet to #occupywallstreet on Oct. 6 that said, Close the border to Connecticut and keep those smelly hippies in Manhattan.
The obvious parody Twitter plays on Greenwichs reputation as one of the richest towns in America with posts such as, My wife says she has absolutely nothing to wear to the revolution and Let the 99% take the morning train from Greenwich. Our drivers chauffeur us straight to Wall Street. Let them eat cake too!
